Lisa M. Legohn is a woman of vision, strength and valor; but yet…a very humble person. Miss Legohn has been a pioneer in promoting the image of welding by encouraging women to enter the field of welding. In September of 1990 she was appointed Associate Professor of Welding Technology at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, female enrollment in the welding program was 2% since Lisa’s tenure it’s been as high as 12%. Her promotion of women into the welding programs and careers is evident by the 2006 and 2008 Work Force Development Awards she received from the Los Angeles Community College District. Lisa is the 1980 Vocational Olympics Gold Medalist for Combination Welding, holder of nine Guinness World Records 2003-2005, have appeared on Discovery Channel’s Monster Garage and “BIG” programs as welder extraordinaire. If you’ve ever seen the three episodes of Monster Garage or thirteen episodes of “BIG” it was not apparent that she was in pain or undergoing any type of medical treatment. She did it all with a SMILE. In promoting the image of welding, she and five of her students, two females and three males were featured in the episode of “BIG” where they made the largest Bar-B-Q Grill in the World.
She is mentioned in books such as: Marquis Who’s Who Who’s Who in America 2008, Marquis Who’s Who Who’s Who of American Women Twenty-Sixth Edition 2007-2008, The Mind At Work, Monster Garage How to Customize Damn Near Anything, Monster Garage In Side Monster Garage, Monster Garage Monster Nation, …this is only a peek into the activities that demonstrate exemplary dedication to the promotion of the image of welding. What makes this leader so special…Lisa was undergoing chemotherapy when she was contacted to tape the Monster Garage programs, at the same time she was an Associate Professor of Welding Technology at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, teaching combination welding to males and females alike. When approached to tape other episodes of Monster Garage she recommended three of her female students. Lisa did not step down because of Cancer; but…to give upcoming female welders a chance to promote the image of welding. There is much more to be told as I did not mention all the books she is listed in or all the awards and honors she has received in the promotion of the image of welding. Lisa M. Legohn is a reflection of the true meaning of “The Image of Welding”.
